New Contemporary Art - a word about contemporary art: Definition of Contemporary Art
|
Definition of Contemporary Art
|
Simply stated,
the term 'contemporary art' generally refers to art being done now! From the
latin prefix ‘con’, meaning ‘together, with’, plus ‘tempus’ meaning time. The
expression ‘contemporary art’ has gained much ascendancy in recent decades, as
the use of the adjective ‘contemporary’ has come to more specifically define
this current period in art history, since the late 60s. This seems partly due
to the lack of any other distinct name given to recognise art done during this contemporary
period, or any dominant school of art as recognized by artists, art historians
and art critics. So basically contemporary art seems to indicate and include
all art made from the late 60s til now, or after the supposed end of the
Modernist or Modern Art period. Art made or performed since the end of
Modernism though is also sometimes called Postmodern art, or Postmodernism.
Contemporary art sounds better to me, as the term divorces itself entirely
from the previous term Modern Art, and ‘contemporary’ seems to be a more
inclusive description.
Can contemporary art be
further defined by
aspects other than time? Apparently not, as perhaps the most defining aspect
of contemporary art is its indefinability. Prior to the late 1960s, or what we
might call the beginning of contemporary art for us, most artwork could be
categorised fairly easily into a particular medium or a specific school. Even
through the 1970s and 80s, there remained certain trends such as Conceptual
Art, Performance Art, Pop Art, Grafitti Art, etc. As with other aspects of
convergence in our ‘contemporary’ world, (we dare not call it modern then?!),
such as the growing speed of technology, the transference of ideas, money,
information and culture around the globe, the same phenomenon seems to be
happening within art too. Therefore many of the boundaries and distinctions
within Art itself have loosened, as can be readily seen in the world of music,
where anything and everything is crossed over, mixed up and shaken with a
total joy of abandon! Much contemporary art of course includes statements of a
political, ethical, racial, economic, gender-based, sexual, etc nature.
However none of this is necessarily defining of itself regarding contemporary
art. Yes, contemporary art often engages issues such as these, but does not
have to. So, all in all contemporary art is an extremely mixed bag. This
Gallery will be pulling out only a tiny fraction of its full potential, but
hopefully a fraction that you will enjoy immensely!

About the Gallery of New Contemporary Art
|
How the Gallery of New Contemporary Art came into being . . .
The Gallery of New
Contemporary Art was conceptualised early in 2006 as a vehicle for presenting
to the world at large what is considered to be the cream of a particular genre
of art, endemic to this little corner of England, West Cornwall. The idea of
making this art available to a much wider audience, both geographically and in
terms of affordability, was hatched by artist, musician and life coach, Steve
Slimm, and taken up passionately by Gallery administrator Helen van Minnen, an
unswervingly devoted fan of both Steve's paintings and his music, from many
years. ‘When I first heard what Steve was proposing to do with his work I was
thrilled, and immediately wanted to help with the project.’ Helen says.
Throughout his 25 years (plus) painting career Steve has not got involved with
the world of art prints, other than a very brief encounter during the early
80s. His work has been almost entirely been kept in its original form, which
limits the final appreciation of any one piece to remain as a single work of
art in a singular location. It is true that there are many art appreciators who cannot afford original paintings, or at best only a piece
or two.
For a few years it has
been planned to make his beautiful work available to a much wider audience.
Then further to bring in other artists of a similar calibre, once the business
is established. So it is with great excitement that we are launching the New
Contemporary Art website with its first artist, Steve Slimm, showing some of
his finest work, and offering it in very affordable packages. We sincerely
hope you enjoy this show of work, and will want to treasure some for yourself
on your walls at home. Please also watch closely for future waves
of enthralling artwork from other artists. Steve Slimm and
Helen van Minnen
